The Cognetik Guide for Getting Adobe Analytics Data Inside Tableau

Transition from Adobe Report Builder to Cognetik’s Tableau Connector

Imagine creating a fully customized dashboard in Tableau that uses multiple data extracts from your Adobe Analytics implementation. The dashboard stays up to date thanks to scheduled refreshes, and you don’t require any help from your IT or engineering team.

In this guide, we’ll show you two ways you can extract data from multiple reports inside your Adobe Analytics account to represent them in Tableau. One process uses Adobe Report Builder, which is an Excel add-on you can download, and the other uses Cognetik Cloud Connector. Cloud Connector allows you to quickly and easily connect Adobe Analytics to Tableau, as it pulls your data from the Adobe Analytics API, which then feeds the data into your Tableau Workbook.

You’ll need:

  1. A general view of KPIs: Visits, bounce rate, revenue.

  2. Marketing data on revenue brought in from different campaigns.

  3. Channel-level data.

Benefits of using the Cognetik Cloud Connector for Tableau when working with Adobe Analytics:

  • Connect and preview your data extracts directly in Tableau without using another tool, like Excel.

  • Define your parameters through an intuitive user interface, which allows for immediate visual feedback on the effect of each action you take. This also means you won’t need database servers or an engineering team.

  • Extract multiple reports from one query (due to the data extracts feature, commonly referred to as data blocks).

  • Reduce the amount of data extracts you publish to the Tableau Server, which keeps your Tableau Admin happy.

  • Minimize the amount of time it takes to refresh your data by scheduling recurring streams.

  • Minimize costs. There is no financial investment required for the individual plan.

  • Lastly, if you need to connect different sources in Tableau that are external to Adobe Analytics, you won’t have to switch between tools and then go back into Tableau. The connector brings a multitude of data sources directly into your dashboard. Currently, these sources include: Adobe Analytics, Facebook Ads, Twitter Ads, Google Ads, YouTube Ads, Kochava, Search Ads 360, Doubleclick for Advertisers, or Bing. See an updated list here.

How to get your Adobe Analytics data into Tableau:
Adobe Report Builder

In Adobe Report Builder, you have to customize everything, then connect that file to Tableau. Whenever you want new data, you go into an Excel file to refresh the data.

1. Connect to Adobe Analytics

Open Up Excel, connect to Adobe Analytics (Add Ons -> Sign in), and add in your credentials.

2. Configure Your Report Settings Dates & Frequency

Click Create, choose report suite, create report & settings, and configure the dates that your report will auto-refresh.

Define which interval you want to refresh the requests. In this example, we chose seven days.

The Cognetik Cloud Connector

The Cognetik Cloud Connector combines multiple data extracts into one data extract, simplifying the setup and management of your worksheet. You access and bring together multiple Adobe Analytics reports into one dashboard.

1. Connect&Link Your Adobe Analytics Account Inside Tableau

Open Tableau desktop. On the left-hand side, under Connect to a Server, click Web Data Connector. In the URL box, type https://tableau.cognetik.com and hit Enter.

The blocks can be named so they are easily recognizable in Tableau.

5. Define the Granularity and Start Date

Select a timezone for your data, choose the right calendar for your needs, and define your preferred date range (either with preset parameters or define date ranges in customized date expressions).

All this is helpful when pulling data from a data source at a weekly or monthly granularity because data would already be correctly aggregated, with the Cognetik Cloud Connector doing all the heavy lifting.
